Certificates Required

  • Certified Australian Death Certificate
  • Embalming Certificate by a qualified licensed embalmer
  • Statutory Declaration of the manner that the casket is sealed, wrapped and prepared for air carriage.
  • Non-Infectious Certificate by a qualified Medical Practitioner or Coroner


Consular Restrictions/Requirements

  • 2 copies of the Death Certificate
  • Certificate stating the coffin is hermetically sealed
  • Before the remains can be removed from the aircraft, the Medical Officer’s approval needs to be gained and they need to be advised prior to arrival.
  • Cremated remains can be sent as cargo or with a passenger depending in the airline’s rules.
  • An import permit is to be obtained. To apply for it certified copies of the death certificate and cremation certificate are required. This application is to be made through the Ministry of Health, Senior Medical Officer of Health, 5 Marescaux Road, Kingston 5. There is a fee for this service.
